David Campion bought a camera with the money he received for not smoking before he turned eighteen and has been making photographs ever since. Coming of age in apartheid South Africa gave him a distrust of dominant social mythologies and an appreciation of the power of photography to shape a society’s self image. Many of his projects wrestle with notions of power and its repercussions. His photographs show regularly in art galleries and museums. He often works with his wife, writer Sandra Shields. Together they are the authors of three books including BC Book Prize winner, Where Fire Speaks, and Cowboy Wild, an irreverent look at the cowboy on the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede (forthcoming May 2012 from Rocky Mountain Books).
